Thank you, 7 DWE. [text removed by MSE Forum Team] As I don't live in London I know nothing about it. I'm still a country girl at heart even though I live on the edge of a small market town.

DH and I each get full retirement pensions because we both contributed to the scheme over many years in our careers, which started at age 16 and ended at age 67. We each get AA, which is a disability benefit and non-means-tested, because we're both disabled.

I think using WFP to heat a greenhouse and provide good food can be construed as using it for what the payment was intended for.

We were asked to give money to charity by Dame Joan Bakewell, if you remember back a few months, and that's what I did.

The bus pass is a simpler argument. You don't have to have it unless you want it. I don't want it so I don't have it. No need to means-test it. Just don't apply for it.

No, council tax is separate from rent; if on a low income, someone would claim council tax benefit.

Council tax benefit would possibly be a lot more use because it is a big slice of the monthly outgoings.
My take on offering "freebies" rather than increasing the basic pension is that a, it sounds more generous than £4 per week and b, it doesn't then have to be increased regularly in line with the cost of living.

You could be right. I am just sceptical about any politicians in power. I saw it as putting a noose around the neck of any future government of whatever colour, binding them to something they would find it impossible to get out of.
