Nationwide - statement of settled account from 2008

Bit of a random one, not sure if anyone has experienced this, but hopefully you can give me some advice/ideas.
We are looking to get finance for a new car. There is a black mark on our credit report from a Nationwide account which is causing the credit application to fail. The mark is from a current account which the overdraft went into arrears because of bank charges. We settled the entire account in full back in 2008 but the 'default' mark remained on there.
The car garage just want a letter from Nationwide confirming the account is no longer in default and they can pass our application for the car.
Since we asked Nationwide have changed the credit report to 'Satisified' but they won't confirm other details.
Trouble is Nationwide said they can't access the account information from 4 years ago because it is closed and therefore cannot confirm the status of the account. They can confirm over the phone that it is cleared but they won't put it in writing.
So stuck at a bit of a dead end. Don't know what else to do really, I don't think the car garage would accept Experian sending a letter and we'd have to pay membership for them to do that anyway.
Are Nationwide lying, seems silly that the details are half on their system but they can't even access it themselves.
The cynic in me is wondering if they are being difficult because we are no longer Nationwide customers and therefore not worth pleasing.

What other details do they want confirmed.
The default marked 'satisfield' should be enough for any company doing a credit check.
They really dont need any more information than this.
By the way the account is still in 'default' status and will remain so until 6 years after it was registered even if it is marked 'satisfield'
Could you go to your bank for a loan, garages are notorious for adding fees etc onto loans.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
They just want a confirmation that the account is not outstanding and we have not defaulted on it recently.
Our credit rating is poor anyway, without the Nationwide default, although I think improved since the default was marked satisfied. So I think if the car dealer ran the check again we might be declined.
But for them all they want is a letter from Nationwide. But Nationwide are being really unhelpful / we are stuck behind procedure.0 -
Nationwide are not really obliged to, although with it been a 2008 default think it will still effect the credit applicationDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0
