Hi all

I want to sell my car privately and just wondered if anyone can offer advice as to the best way to do it. I don't need another car so was thinking of Autotrader or Exchange and Mart. Thanks :)

I don't think there is any magic place to sell a car - I've had cars sell on free sites that have sat on Autotrader for weeks with no interest and vice versa.

Despite all the potential shennanigans I've found the free places like Gumtree or Trade-it to be quite good. Depending on the car pistonheads might be an option, or theres always ebay, Autotrader etc if you can stump up for the fees.

It can be worth writing out a little advert with a photo and sticking it up in your local shop. I'v sold a couple of cars that way.

    Good luck anyway.

Watch out for the scammers who agree to buy your car straight away without even coming to inspect it first. They'll want to send you a cheque for more than the agreed value of the car, asking you to send the difference (via WU or MG) to their 'shipper' who is coming to pick up the car on their behalf.

You cant sell a car nobody wants
    so
sit down, look on places like autotrader/ebay and see if your model is desirable or a landmark
if desirable try advertising where you think it will attain highest price for the area you live
ie if you live on the isle of skope the local newsagents window is best but remember dave isnt open thursdays because thats sheep gathering day
if in a busy cosmopolitan area consider all options
