Credit card company not closing account

A couple of years ago I had the Argos cashback credit card, which eventually stopped paying cashback and morphed into a standard card. As it was no longer of any use to me I wrote to them and asked them to close down my account, which they confirmed they would.

A good while later I got a statement through, so called them up and asked why I'd been sent this if my account was closed. They assured me that the credit account was closed and it was just an end of year statement type thing.

I've now had another statement come through (showing £0.00) so the account is obviously still live and they have lied to me, presumably to make their figures for live accounts look better.

As I've now requested them to close the account twice and they have failed to do so, would I be best asking them yet again or just taking the matter to a regulatory body. The only way to speak to the issuer is on an 0845, which I'm loath to do so if I can help it.

I doubt it's live and I doubt they've lied. I imagine their system is forcing statements to all accounts at certain periods and erroneously picking up closed accounts.

Ask them to confirm that nothing can be spent on the account. That's as closed as an account gets. It won't be purged from the system for some time yet, if ever.

OK, many thanks. I will get them to confirm.
