Autonational breakdown shooting themselves in the foot - who is best in 2012 ?

I've been with Autonational for a couple of years, paying around £66 or so a year but which is regularly extended to 15 months and through Topcashback it qualifies for an 18% cashback, making a 12 month equivalent of about £43.

However, this year they want £66 for 12 months and there is no budging them. In fact, their attitude on the phone (remembering also that I have never claimed either) was atrocious and the abject and contemptuous treatment of existing policy holders has made up my mind to tell them to stuff their renewal where the sun don't shine and get another provider.

So who is best for breakdown in 2012 ?

Not looking for the £1.99 "only comes to save you on the 17th of each month" type policy but rather a fairly comprehensive policy including at home help and for a discounted price either direct of through cashback.

I hadn't read it recently and thanks for the link but it is purely price driven. I want input relating to experience of use, not just price.
  • Today I had a breakdown within a mile of my home and AutoNational would not come out.

I had assumed they would have the same 0.25mile rule as do the AA and RAC. (Don't ASSUME - it makes an !!! out of U and ME).

To cut a long story short, The customer service was very rude and I was spoken to in a patronising way and rudely. I was phoned back to say that the request for a mechanic would be cancelled as I did not meet the 1 mile rule, however about 2 hours later one turned up and mended the car!

£66 for 12 months breakdown cover is a good price compared to rest of the market. You may find a cheaper introductory offer from another provider, but in 12 months time you will be back on these boards complaining that the renewal price is significantly more than the introductory price, and that you haven't even had to use their service, so why has the price gone up?

I have been with AutoAid for a few years. It is now £38 per year. I have used them a couple of times paying for the work at the time; I received the money back very quickly and would recommend it as being good value for money.

The car is irrelevant- it's the person who is the member of the AA, not the car.
