Changing Vehicle with Personalised Number Plate

I'm looking to buy a new car and sell my existing car privately but need advice regarding the personalised plate.

I understand that due to the new continous car insurance law that both cars will need to be insured at all times. How can i keep both cars insured and transfer the number plate to the new vehicle whilst trying to sell my original car.

Can the insurance company insure both cars on the same policy until my car is sold?

What would happen if I just changed the policy to the new car and left the original car uninsured?

I am aware that i will need to have the personalised plate removed from the original car and log book before I am able to sell the vehicle.

Some will some wont. You might get 7 days free insurance if you HPI the new car.

Failing that you maybe better off finacially part x'ing or selling it to the dealer.

Paying to keep both cars insured may not be worth the effort.

If the original car is uninsured you need to declare SORN send the tax back and take it off the road.
So unless a trader comes with trade plates buyers wont be able to test drive it.

If its seen on the road you will get fines and it maybe towed away. And you will have issues getting it back as you dont have tax or insurance.

Short term policies may exclude the collection of impounded cars.

Never had a private plate but would think the easiest way would be to get a new plate for your old car and the private plate on retention first so that it's ready to be sold as soon as you buy another car. Most insurance companies will let you insure your old car on a week by week basis until it is sold.

The easiest way but the longest way is to put the reg on retention, wait for the new V5 to arrive and then sell the car. Then when you buy the new car you can transfer the reg across when you apply for the new log book.

You may have to have have the insurance on the new car on the old details for a few weeks then change the details. Many online insurances now allow you to do this online, I did this with quote me happy on line.

You won't have to but it is by far the most sensible way of doing it.

I sold my last car quickly, on a whim almost, and did'nt have time to change the reg before.
Luckily it was to a fairly near neighbour as the DVLA cocked everything up and sent all my documents to her address and vice versa:A

The issue here isn't particularly about your private number plate, it is about owning two cars at the same time and keeping them both insured. As some of the other money savers have already advised, it may be wise to apply to retain your registration as soon as you can. The fastest way to go about that is to apply in person at any DVLA Local Office.

It costs £105 to DVLA to put a registration on retention and you can then assign it to your new car when it is convenient.

I should know this but to clarify for the op, (and me), is that charge the same as if the transfer was done as a direct transfer, ie, imediate with no period on retention?

If the registration is transferred direct from one vehicle to another vehicle the fee payable to DVLA is £80.

This website article explains the DVLA fees associated with private number plates.

Ok, thanks, well as per the bottom line of your signature guess next time I'll put up with the more awkward route, :money:over convenience ;)
