Help, Ruby stone.

Hello, my friend gave me a ruby stone, he said that it's worth a lot of money. Since i have never been involved in jewellery stuff, i don't know where to go to sell it. I don't know how much its worth either. Yesterday i looked at the prices of ruby stones and found that this one: http : // www . rubyfair . com / photos / myFile_fine_1.2_ct . jpg (Delete spaces) looks pretty much the same as mine, but mine has a flat bottom. It's worth nearly 2000 Pounds! Any help where could i go to sell it and how much it's likely to be worth?

take it to several jewelers and ask them
If you don't need the money now, keep the stone until you do.

It is silly to ask us.

Gemstoneshave to be examined as their value is all about size/weight/codition none of which we know here.

So take it to be appraised at several high end jwelers and maybe one pawn shop/gold buyer etc. If you get mre than one oppinion you have a chance at oat least the actual conditon/weight.

In any case, I hope you weren't 'given' this in lieu of debt w/o knowing if it was real? people dont in general (I find) run around giving friends and acquantances things worth thousands?
  • No, i never lend this person any money whatsoever. I don't know where this person got it from, i'm pretty sure he's not a thief. He just gave me it, we were friends since we were 10, now i'm 33 so it might be just a gift for no reason.
  • You could look for a registered valuer at https://www.jewelleryvaluers.org - they will charge a fee so maybe not worth doing unless you intend to hold onto it and want to insure it - but the list of valuers on this site may at least give you the address of a local jeweller who may be able to tell you if it is worth getting a formal valuation done.
