Android tablet or Ipod help.

Options
Hello I know this must be a common theme, so sorry if i am repeating anything.

My mum is going to come into some money soon and wanted to buy my son (who is 10) a 3d TV, he says that he dosent want one but would like an ipod like his friend who has an ipod nano.

I spoke to a friend and then started going into how much better a tablet would be, could watch movies etc... think i zoned out half way through but it did sound better. So i have been looking online but not really sure where to start. My mum said she would spend about £400 as thats what she wanted to pay for the TV, but i can add money if required.

Do you think an Ipod would do him for his age or is a tablet worth the extra money, which do you think would be the best to get, he will be using for a good few years, not looking for the most up to date just something that will last.

Many thanks for any help provided.

Figure out what he wants to do.

If he just wants to listen to music on the move, an iPod Shuffle/Nano/Classic is the way to go.

If he wants, or you want to give him, internet access via wifi as well as music and video, iPod Touch

For a larger screen for video, and some other doo-dads, the iPad. But it's far less portable than an iPod Nano.... and won't fit in his pocket, or clip onto his clothing....

Thanks for the reply, he wont want to listen to music it will mostly be for using a memory stick for movies on the go (or if the tablet had enough memory without), wifi access at home and downloading games to play on the go.

So is a tablet the way to go? If so which would be the best for him?

You can pickup Ipad2 Wifi+3G 32GB for your budget which would be an ideal tablet.

Ive owned Ipad/Android/RIM devices and also code for all the aforementioned platforms.

RIM are dying, if their X device is not a success then they'll be dead in the water, a 94% loss in their share price over the past few years and their 10,000+ layoffs in Canada reflect this.

Android is a great OS but even the samsung galaxy tab is sluggish to use , the app market is very good but apps lack cohesion (i.e. one apps has the same interface as another ) and it is till too buggy (even with ICS) for my liking.

Yes Apple charge developers a fee for app development but they also scrutinise each app for a fairly demanding ruleset/acceptance. The iOS 5 guidelines/best practice is over 300 pages and each developer is expected to read and absorb this. As such the apps in the market place are higher quality then both Androids marketplace and RIM's playbook app market.

I'd advise going to somewhere where you can play with a samsung galaxy tab and an iPad 2 (or iPad 3) and judge for yourself.

If movies on the go eg car journeys, away from home etc then yes a tablet. The next thing is apple or android tabs, does he know anyone with either an ipad/android tab (are kids kids at 10 too fussed about a preference), android tabs theres a wide range but for £400 theres not many that are that price, 2 i can think(at possibly £400 price) are the samsung tab and the asus Eee pad Transformer.

Ipod Touch gets my vote. I've hardly used my tablet since getting one. Make sure you go for the 32Gb or 64Gb one though.

I have a 64Gb iPod Touch but it really is too small for watching films.

I'd advise either an Android tablet or an iPad. You can also get a Blackberry Playbook for much less (but I wouldn't really advise this).
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.
