£2.50/month phone contract - any catches?!

I've finally almost finished a looonnnnggg 18 month contract with T-mobile.
I rang up last night to cancel, and the lady on the phone just couldn't accept i wanted to cancel....giving me the hard sell to stay with them. No thanks!

I've just signed up for a clearance deal with The Phone Stop....free Motorola L6, and only £2.50 a month for 250 minutes and 100 texts...trouble is it's a cheque back deal...i have to pay £30 a month and then receive cheques refunding most of the line rental...
A credit of £81.00 will be raised automatically by cheque within 2 months if you
do not cancel your contract. You will receive a text message when this credit
has been successfully raised. To gain the remainder of your line rental / cash
back please send your 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th monthly bills within 30 days of
the date stated on the relevant airtime bill, to us and we will credit you by
cheque with £62.25 each time.

This will save you £330.00 over the 12 month duration of the contract. In effect
this means that your average line rental per month over the contract period is
£2.50 per month.

i know it will be a bit of a hassle remembering to send off the bills etc, but on the face of it it seems like such a good deal, and far cheaper than pay as you go...

Has anyone had any problems with these offers?

  • I had a similar deal a few years back, I changed my SIM every year and got cashback which worked out at £5 a month with 600 mins offpeak free.

They rely on people either forgetting or not bothering, its a lot of hassle as you said but worth it in the end.

As long as they dont go bust in the next 12 months of course!

The Phone Spot are owned by The Carphone Warehouse. As they're one of the biggest names in phones it would be very unlucky if they went bust!

These deals are usually only available online and not in-store. There can't be much profit margin in it for them if the cashback goes through fine. The same deals are also available at E2save, which are also owned by the Carphone Warehouse. If anyone is interested, pm me and I'll refer you and split the commission with you (£10 each) if it goes through fine once its received inside 45 days (so they say).

  • Don't forget quidco with e2save - I did but my parents got £36.50

I used these people last year

    http://www.phoneboxdirect.com/cphones.asp

and got all my money back

No, problems as far this year

As it says in one of the postings above , you need to make sure you claim at the right time or else you loose the right to any more refunds

    Hope this helps ....
  • the catch is its £2.50 there are loads of these deals for free, plus quidco

Whenever I look for a phone contract I use the reestit mutton website. There is a zero cost radar (link http://www.reestit-mutton.co.uk/MOBILES/index.php?pg=1&query=12mfree Haven't looked at the deals but the advantage of this site is that he calculates the contract term cost (so if they've got clauses on having to pay full for 6 months afterwards, he will have included it).

    Hope this helps.
