One more question......I am just about to put my complaint in writing (despite being told on the phone I dont need to- well sorry but yes I do - i want a paper trail for this complaint!)

Of course they will refund money owed to me (I am expecting in the region of £1500 for overcharged bills) but I wondered what your advice would be on a ball park figure for compensation for the following

    a) the fact that me and my 2 kids froze all winter, too scared to turn boiler on, with quilts and blankets nailed up at doors and windows so no natural light in house felt like a prison-

    b) on the rare occassions I could cope no more with the cold - I used an electric heater to take the chill off one room......of course its more expensive to use such heaters than it would have been to use my boiler! I also had to boil kettle for hot water for dishes etc.

So any ideas on what sort of compensation figure would be normal for this type of complaint? I dont think a £50 credit will quite do it this time!

Bearing in mind I have complained about the bills since moving in here(2 years) and nobody at EDF picked up on the actual problem.

But you have also had a 2 year period of interest free credit on the o/s amount owed.
This isn't all down to EDF, you also failed to identify the issue, which is not uncommon.
You will not get any compensation for mental trauma or consequential loss.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Yes of course I agree that I failed to identify the actual problem.....although it's really not an easy one to spot.

However I did pay all my bills on time and have therefore had no interest free period that I am aware of......In fact EDF have had my money interest free!

Apologies, I was having a senior moment and thinking that you owe them money! You may find that they reduce the balance somewhat owing by way of compensation. So I suggest you do your own calculation of what you expect to get while waiting for the revised bill

no apologies needed.....in fact EDF made the same mistake when I said to them that I am expecting it to be a large difference and would like it resolved quickly ....their answer was 'dont worry we will give you 2 years to pay '......:rotfl::rotfl:I did correct them reminding them that they actually owe ME a significant amount of money!:rotfl:

    thanks again for your input

They have credit me £949 so far but I am disputing this as I have very detailed calculations of the charges v my calculations:D expect it to go up! And I havent said yes or no to their £50 goodwill gesture yet

  • I met a very intelligent man, a doctor, who had two years of aggro wondering why his bills were sky high, the gas meter was switched at the same time approx as his central heating boiler.he complained to B.G. who said it would be boiler. He had the central heating people out often trying to solve the problem, at a cost eventually. He was extremely grateful when we got on the phone to BG to agree it was the old 4 dial 5 dial mix up. The suppliers seem to lack a bit of common sense not twigging that the ratio of increase is exactly the ratio of the two meter mess up, 2.8. I fully agree that you deserve a good compensation. The fragile old lady I met was just given the excess back, I only wish I had thought of getting a claim going on her behalf myself.
I might add I have never heard management mentioning anything at all at our meetings about this problem to any of the new meter readers we get at all.Training is pretty minimal, they just tag along with another meter reader for a couple of days after doing a bit of the usual health n safety stuff

Have you considered contacting Ofgem - https://www.ofgem.gov.uk, they may be able to give you some more advice on how much you've been overcharged.

    hello MMP:D

I was thinking to contact them anyway to see why they are not insisting that this matter is publicised .....and why more is not being done. How many OAP's are in this situation??

But I know how much EDF owe me, despite them suddenly removing all my bills that were online yesterday......I have copies and a very detailed spreadsheet.

How difficult could it be with today's technology to find out who is being charged on an imperial conversion factor when they they a metric meter.

sacsquacco...well done for helping where you can.......what a shame that the energy companies themselves dont take such an interest.
