You need an add/bolt on to use Blackberry services.
How do I add a signature?

T-Mobile SIM? Activate with a £10 topup and get Free BIS until the end of the month and the next month whilst still having the £10 credit. Topup £10 or £11 again just before the end of the second month in order to get another free month of BIS for the month after. Once that month is up, you can use that £20 to purchase this Booster.
    6 month BlackBerry® Booster £20 6 months of internet, BlackBerry® Mail and BBM Text 6MONTHBB to 441

So, up to 9 months for £20. Plus of course, you would have had your chosen call/text bundle for three of those months.

I've got a BB with a standard SIM in it and I just get phone calls & texts.

The email & BB messenger capabilities require an extra service (that costs you, of course).

Yes, but then you will need to use data, perhaps in conjunction with the Opera Mini Browser. Not really convenient and will cost you anyway.

My option allows you to get the best from the BB, whilst keeping the cost down to as little as £2.20 per month incl.
