Depends on the car, if I was buying a banger for a price in the low 3 digits then I wouldn't worry about a Cat D.

Bought a Cat D Volvo 460 for £100 once, it was Cat D'd after someone reversed into it and put a big dent in the front wing.. purely cosmetic. Repaired by putting on a scrapyard wing and then sold 2 years later when the owner came into some money.

Bargain, got another 2 years out of that car.

Once you get to 4 figure prices, I'd start to be nervous though. It's purely an economic thing for insurance companies, so on a £6000 car that could be a thousand or so worth of repairs needed and so more likely to be significant.

As Lum says the insurers are always worried that the client will not be happy with repairs or there is further hidden damage and if that is potentially the case then it is more economic to write off. There is also a huge market in Eastern Europe (you try bidding on Copart and you will soon see) which keeps salvage prices relatively high.

That's broadly my view too, but the market is being distorted by the insurance companies, look at some of the car that are now selling with a cat d label.
