What are the codes on reverse side of cheque, please?

I have copy cheques - they are from 2000/01 and 2005. Does anyone know what the printed codes are on the reverse, please? They were processed through Barclays. I have worked out quite a lot of the information but Financial Ombudsman says bank account number of recipient is on the back ... ? Any help would be much appreciated.

I worked for Midland Bank (now HSBC) back in the early/mid 1990's when bulk processing centres first started handling all the cheques paid into the branches. They printed the sort code and account number of the recipient, as well as date, time, transaction number, etc on the reverse of the cheque. I would imagine Barclays do similar.

Why do you need this information ? If you issued the cheques, you must have written the payees name on ?

I believe the cheques went into a bogus bank account. The organisation the cheques were allegedly paid to cannot prove receipt of the monies, totalling around £3,000.

    Codes of first cheque are:

    06571735 0519 206670 200901

I know the numbers underlined are the sort code and date - not sure what the first two sets are.

    Codes on second cheque are:

    3162107604 209911
    15/03/2005 11 1588 1513 177
    BARCLAYS OUT

    2017190036 2558130450 20173500 Return to 206670 15032005

Underline sort codes and date. Can anyone identify what the other numbers might be, please?

What were the cheques for and how are you hoping this information will help you ? Even if you manage to get the account numbers, it will be very difficult to get any more information due to the DPA. Unless there is Police involvement.

They were taken from my sister's bank account by the person who operated it for her (she has LD). He was convicted of theft and jailed in 2007 and it has taken me years to get her information from the care home she then lived in. There was a coverup by the home and police and I know that a lot more money was taken. I have complained to the IPCC and they have assigned an officer to me but it seems to be down to me to get the evidence to take it further. My main goal is to get her money back from the home.

Could the 8 digit codes 06571735 be the account numbers where the cheque was paid into? and 0519 cheque numbers?

Sounds very complicated, i hope you manage to sort it out :)

I used to use these codes many years ago when i used to deal with cheque fraud cases but when the way cheques were processed changed, i never dealt with them again.

We had a system which gave you the sort code and account number of the account the cheques had been paid into by using the info from the back of the cheque. I would contact whichever bank the cheques came from for more information, have you asked them ?

Yes, I have asked them. It is a building society and they are helpful. I think I am getting close to finding out what happened but it's a long time ago, as you can see. It's extremely complicated and involved people high up (a CEO has already lost his job over it!)

    Thank you for your interest.

One of the cheques appears to have been paid into Barclays (201719). Barclays account numbers have a second digit '0' and I can't find a number that seems to fit. I know the account number of the supposed recipient and it isn't on the cheque - that's what is puzzling.
