and from a commercial POV no incentive on the companies to train them in the rules given that there is no penalty on insures if they make a "low ball" offer on a total loss.

If the punter doesn't know more than the insurer staff then the offer gets accepted and adds to profits.

If the punter does know more than the staff then the offer gets upped to what it should have been in the first place.

Win win for the insurer, maybe it's time to introduce a significant downside for such flagrant (and systematic?) breaches of the rules?

Sorry I thought I was in the insurance bit. Not very good at this kind of thing!
The bike was a Suzuki GSX 1400 , 2001. Poor thing, his pride and joy!

I would suggest £2,500 is a pretty fair valuation for an 11 year old bike.

There's a 2001 Suzuki GSX 1400 on eBay right now - starting price £2300 and currently no bids. Keep an eye on it and see what it goes for (or even put a bid in and see if you can get it for £2500 or less)

you should get a job with an insurance company, it would save them all that tiresome going and looking at vehicles, gathering info about mileage & condition etc etc. They could just send you the model and age and, hey presto, a fair valuation.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, there are two 2001 bikes on autotrader, on with 22k miles at £3.2k and one with 11k mikes at £4k.

    really?[/URL]

    2001 advertised for £3,190 @ Charlies Motorcycles. 2003 advertised for £2,995 @ Jax Motorcycles.
Do these dealers really expect to get their ticket price?
Do you really expect the insurer to offer dealer advertised ticket price?

These bikes are immaculate. Was OP's bike in showroom condition?
I will be really surprised if OP gets more than £2,500.
