How can you tell if a wireless mouse is transmitting?

Options
I bought a wireless keyboard and mouse set several years ago for XP, but failed to get either working. Now, older (but none the wiser) I'm now having another go. No response from either again, but I was wondering if a mouse lights up in any way when it transmits so I can eliminate that as a fault before proceeding. It's a five buttoned rodent but wheeled, not optical. The software seemed to install OK.
Oh, and it's a multimedia keyboard and a 'browser' mouse (whatever that is!)

Have you pressed the sync buttons on the keyboard and mouse and sender unit? They have to be done in sequence.

I knew nothing of syncing because the sparse instructions don't mention it! Here they are:
    • Turn off the computer and plug in the connectors of the receiver to the computer.
    • Turn on the computer and implement the linkage operation.
    • Insert the driver CD-ROM to install the drivers of the mouse and keyboard.
    • You shall find setting icons of the mouse and keyboard on the task bar after complete the installation. Double click the icons to act the powerful functions.
    (sic)

I've read up on syncing but it differs according to make. Although I still have the box, I cannot ascertain the make; it seems to be completely generic. It does state it has a PS/2 interface if that's any help, and the mouse also has a sleep mode.

Edit: I've just done a search on the FCC ID no. and it came up with this

Ok, is the receiver using the PS/2 interface? If so, check these are the right way around as one is for the keyboard and the other is the mouse, and both ports look the same on the back of a computer so it is easy to put them the wrong way around.

There is usually a little picture icon on the back of a keyboard next to the keyboard port and mouse next to the mouse port.

If those are in correctly then I would suggest following instructions for one of the known makes and see, if nothing, then try an alternative make etc.
