Sadly not, well none that aren't password protected-TangleFoot- wrote: »Hmm... any Wi-Fi hotspots in the vicinity?
I'll try your previous suggestion of ad and flash blocking if the agreed time limit doesn't work out. Blocking images is a no-no according to my grandson

How about traffic shaping http://www.raymond.cc/blog/restrict-or-limit-internet-download-and-upload-transfer-speed/ or http://geeknizer.com/windows-bandwidth-throttle/ if you don't want to disable video/images/music (seriously the text element of facebook is quite light)0

Favoured browser? Chrome has what amounts to Flash-blocking built-in:- Click on the spanner and select Settings
- Click + Show advanced settings
- Click on the button marked Content Settings
- Under Plug-ins, select Click to play.

Thanks, but I'm using Firefox with Adblock installed and Flashblock available.-TangleFoot- wrote: »Favoured browser? Chrome has what amounts to Flash-blocking built-in:
Any advantage to using facebook on his iPod touch? Or does it just download the same image but simply display it smaller?
I think that time limiting seems to the best/ simplest compromise. It's only for a few days

There is for facebook for iphone/itouch. I don't believe the vids or pictures are downloaded at the same file size as on your desktop, but I could be wrong. Might be worth trying that, and leave the computer unused and see if it does make a difference.0

FYI
After a bit of detective work we solved the problem. No problem with iPhone use or my laptop. Just his netbook.
On the netbook:
Loaded MBAM updated and did a scan - nothing found.
Avira up to date.
Loaded RAS Graph and Stats net monitor and found that it was uploading ridiculous amounts even without IE open.
Control+alt+delete showed Utorrent always was running.
The lad had tried Utorrent downloading a DVD or two and decided it wasn't worth it and gave it up as a bad job - Easier borrowing good DVDs from mates. Didn't uninstall Utorrent and forgot about it. The snag is that it was set to run at startup.:(
Fixed that and bandwidth use is now back to normal or as near normal gets with a teenage kid
Now we will work through the sticky on how to speed up the netbook

Ouch! I would hope that he was using something like PeerBlock with it, but I doubt so. Dodgy torrent sites to name a few, along with companies happy to try and "fine" lotta stories etc.
Glad that it's sorted though! As you've got chance, doing the stickies on here is prolly not a bad idea
