Domestic WCL & Asbestos disposal

Oh. My God.

Trying to get the kitchen done the hoops are amazing. anyway. Planning permission etc all now arranged.

Im now told we need a licensed waste carrier to remove demolition work from the site, and a licensed asbestos disposal person for the asbestos insulation board insulating the current walls. I know this is big sheet sof stuff bolted in, pretty easy to unscrew.

anyway, All the WCL / Asbestos stuff I can find seems to be for big commercial operaitons. I do not have a zillion pounds to spend on someone to do something as basic as knock down some walls and carry the stuff to a skip.

Can anyone suggest a good way to locate someone with the required approvals for a reasonable price in central London?

Ta

Matt

Wh don't you just hire a skip and put all the non asbestos waste in there? All skip companies are licensed waste carriers so they are covered.

Many local amenity tips have asbestos facilities. You remove while wearing protective gear, double bag it and take it to the tip, where there is often an asbestos skip. Check with your local council.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
  • As Phill says your local authority dumps are your best option, some ask them to be double bagged.

It probably just contains small amounts of Chrysotile(white) asbestos which is by far the least dangerous, but if it is blue or brown get professional advice.

I'd look further into this , doesn't sound like the common asbestos cement/asbestolux stuff used for garage roofing sheets, soffits and downpipes etc.
You could get a survey to check it out (about £80 i think) then if its the least dangerous stuff do as suggested above.

The problem I have is that we're in a flat, with nowhere to put a skip - so Im either looking at paying a WCL person to come /every day/ on site to carry stuff away (sounds spendy), and someone else to deal with the asbestos, and possibly a third person to do the demo, or trying to find someone who'll do all three. Was really looking to see if anyone had recommendations on someone to do all 3 in central london.

But yeah. It would be easier by far to just do it all myself - and take to local skip. time is the problem. well. Time and competence. How hard can taking a few walls down be though? ;-p
  • if it is AIB as in asbestos insulating board then it has to be removed very carefully it is a notifiable licenced product, it will most definatly contain amosite which is the blue/brown type ACM. i would suggest looking at the HSE website, yes if you do do it yourself make sure you remove every last trace and they say to try and remove with no breakages also a sample test done afterwards as if u leave a trace and then employ a worker and indirectly expose them to ACM then you are liable. it is a tricky situation and i would get some advice before proceeding.

Anyone can apply for a waste carriers licence. Its another bureaucratic nonsense to extract cash out of people on the pretext of prevention of flytipping and "responsible" waste management. Well thats worked hasn't it!

If you are disposing of your own waste you do not need a WCL.

How do you know that this stuff does contain asbestos?

    What demo?

BTW why do you need planning permission to renew the kitchen in a flat?

    Cheers

I have been thinking of using this company http://atozwaste.co.uk/. I don't know what they're like but I think they would cover central London and they dal with all waste. They quoted me 65 ponds for a test. I found them on our council's What Tradesman scheme. This is a scheme in partnership with Trading Standards; there may be a similar scheme in your area.
