Car problems on trial run

Hi Folks,

I did a trial run today in a 2005 Peugeot Partner Combi (1.4 Petrol). It has got loads of room inside and I thought it might be useful for going on holidays and stuff. Price was close to 3k at an independent dealers.

I was very disappointed right from the start. Could not get into first gear without the clutch pedal hitting the floor. Once in first gear the response was very sluggish. Wasn't until I was in second and third that the car started to move. Once when I went into reverse gear I got a rather worrying strangulated whirring sound.

The other thing that bothered me was that I also had to step hard on the gas pedal before I could get a half decent response. (by which I mean even a lowly 15 to 20 MPH) something I never had to do on previous cars.

When I got out of the car I noticed a sticker on the window saying "Taxi".

My thoughts were that the clutch was knackered, amongst other things, (not too clued up on cars) and that maybe the vehicle had taken some punishment being run as a Taxi.

Trying to learn from this I would appreciate any thoughts on what the symptoms might signify and what kind of costs I might have been looking at if I had not walked away from the car.

And to sensible answers. They're normally good. In this case, it appears to have lasted well as a taxi, which says enough. Clutch wasn't a good sign, but they are fairly heavy with a small engine. You won't get gti performance from one, but they'll plod on forever.

gear selector problems by the sounds of it plus a whirring in reverse probably the clutch thrust bearing, or gearbox bearings.

the 1.4 is not genrally a performer of an engine and yes to be in a partner combi is a bit ambitious of peugeot.
you will get allot better out of a 2.0HDI.

for 3k if the gearbox is shot, and the engine needs a god service plus a compression test to check for HG leaks as i suspect this one will have with little or no pull at all you could easily equal that price in repairs.

your right to walk away from this one, but keep looking citroen do a berlingo wich is the same thing rebadged and normally a little cheaper in price.
