I have spent most of the day trying to get my pc to connect to the internet - I am on the laptop at the moment. It is on vista and uses a netgear usb to connect to the router. The laptop is working fine. I have reinstalled the netgear and that is working fine according to the pc but I can only get an unidentified network although the connection is showing the correct one and local only access. I have tried all sorts of things I have found by looking at answers already on forums but none have worked.
This is what the connection says
Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Description: Wireless N-300 USB Adapter WNA3100
Physical Address: E0-46-9A-14-64-3A
DHCP Enabled: Yes
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address: 169.254.218.88
IPv4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
IPv4 Default Gateway:
IPv4 DNS Server:
IPv4 WINS Server:
NetBIOS over Tcpip Enabled: Yes
Link-local IPv6 Address: fe80::bc72:ae39:357e:da58%16
IPv6 Default Gateway:
IPv6 DNS Servers: fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1, fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1, fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1
any ideas of what i should check? I'm not sure what went wrong it was working one day then not the next - kids could have clicked something but i've no idea.
thanks.

The wireless connection isn't picking up an I/P address.
Unless you have another device connected to your router, I would suggest you physically connect the laptop to one of the ports on your router and use your browser to navigate to the I/P address of the router. This will be a local I/P such as 192.168.1.1 - this may be labelled on the router.
If it connects, check the DHCP function is switched ON under the "LAN SETTINGS" section of the router configuration page.0 -
Open System Restore by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking System Restore.! If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Go to the network and Sharing Center. Look in active networks. If it says your connection is a Public Network, click the link next to it on the right (I think it says customise or change), and change the connection type to Private (Or Home). Disable and re-enable the USB dongle and try connecting again.How do I add a signature?0 -
Would it help to specify a local IP address for the MAC address (aka "Physical Address") of the USB adapter in the router settings...?0

My laptop connects to the internet through the same router and is working fine but its the family desktop that won't connect. I've tried the above ideas of system restore but that hasn't solved the problem. I've also tried changing from public to private network but it keeps defaulting back to public each time I restart the computer. It also says unidentified network in the sharing and network page but underneath says the name of my network and local connection only.
anything else I can try?
thanks.0 -
Could it be a DNS foul-up on the desktop?
Is it worth flushing that out and starting again?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Might be worth sticking a known woirking wired ethernet card in to check the basic connectivity of the rest of the box..........**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. Have you tried this yet?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233
Click on the Microsoft 'Fix it' icon down in the page and follow the instructions..

Although it is detecting the correct network, it is treating it as a public / unidentified network and this is the reason you cannot get online.
Is the (working) laptop running Windows 7 or Vista? Please post the connection information for the laptop (as you did for the desktop in the OP)
Have you changed any settings on your router recently?
Which security mode is the router set to?How do I add a signature?0
