Hi mouseymousey,
When my cat got covered in engine oil I phoned the vet and they told me to put some washing up liquid or swarfega onto a wet cloth and rub it off. I used washing up liquid and it worked.

I have used washing up liquid, but rinse throroughly, as cat will wash him/herself and you will think its foaming at the mouth!Carolbee0

yes i agree with the washing up liquid, the previous tenants put some grease like anti vandal paint on the back fence and my cat got covered in it and i found washing him down with a soaking flannel and plenty of washing up liquid worked a treat, the downside was trying to rinse him off in a sink of water!!!
Wear protective clothing ie long sleeves and put a thick towel on/over your shoulders just in case your cat decides to climb up you to escape the rinsing off.

Poor cat, hope he's ok. When our cat came in covered in oil phoned the vet who said to use baby shampoo on the oil and them warm water to get it off. Make sure you get all the soap out. If you add the shampoo first, without water, this helps break up the oil.January budget

Swarfega is available in my local poundland, but is much more expensive in wilkinsons, possibly moreso in Halfords etc.0

Many years ago I used a dab of butter to clean my hands after working on the car & it worked a treat...dunno about a cat though!0

The best way to rinse off the cat (I worked in a vets when I was a teenager and this is what my boss did) is to soak a large towel and have one dry. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and wrap the wet towel around the cat quite tight so you don't get scratched. Rub the wet towel to get rid of the soap suds. Repeat if you think necessary. Then wrap the cat tight in the dry towel. Best done in a room where you can close the door. At the end of the ordeal make sure there is a bowl of food or treats for the car as a reward.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J0

I've had to bath the cat and what I did was use the wet towel/ dry towel approach. (We had two people to make it easier)
I put the cat in the bath wrapped him in one towel (dry) one person held him while the other gently showered the cat through its towel thus wetting the towel and cat. We then lifted up different parts of the towel and applied shampoo then rinced again through the towel.
Hope this helps

I would phone your vet's surgery for advice. When my (stupid) cat managed to sit in a container of engine oil, I was told by the vet to bath her in swarfega, as engine oil is poisonous for cats, and they can absorb it through their skin, as well as ingesting it through trying to lick it off. I still have the scars to prove it, but the cat was OK. I really would ring the vet's surgery, as they are unlikely to charge just for advice over the phone if you are a registered client. A qualified veterinary nurse at the practice could advise you on this in any case.0
