£112 electric bill in 1 month!
Hi just after some advice please
1029kWh electric used in a month costing £112!
we moved into our house late december just before xmas. initally we had prepayment meters for gas and electric. our intention was always to get this changed once we'd settled in for standard monthly/quarterly billed credit meters.
we spent around £40 on electric a month with the prepayment meter (we dont have gas central heating)
when we got the meter changed we received a final bill for the prepayment which said we owed an additional £40 on top of what we had already paid! I called British Gas up and they said we were being billed this because our meter was on an old tariff and didn't reflect current pricing. They did however agree to write these additional costs off.
anyway after having the standard meter a month we managed to use 1029kWh!!!!!!!! costing us £112.38! ...
as I said earlier we dont have central heating, something we are going to invest in ASAP, in the meantime I really need to get the electric costs down. we use an electric heater in the bedroom which is on timer & thermostat on and off through the night. we have another electric heater in the hallway but thats not on much. the PC is on most days. we use the gas fire in lounge and a gas heater on the landing. most lights use low energy light bulbs too!
We used 642kWh in a month when we had the pre-payment meter, which also seems quite high.
Am I on the wrong tarriff with BG? they have stated my charges below:
For 650.00 kWh consumed used over 21 days
Base Rate 1 = 52.00 kWh at 17.575 pence per kWh 9.14
Base Rate 2 = 598.00 kWh at 9.916 pence per kWh 59.30
For 379.00 kWh consumed used over 12 days
Base Rate 1 = 30.00 kWh at 17.575 pence per kWh 5.27
Base Rate 2 = 349.00 kWh at 9.916 pence per kWh 34.61
we also spend £40 a month on gas!!!
help!
thanks

It appears you live in the Yorkshire area and those prices are the BG Standard Rate tariff (before VAT@5%)
Those prices did reduce yesterday and there are cheaper tariffs on BG and with other companies. As we are currently in a round of price cuts it might be better to change to a BG on line tariff until the situation on price cuts is clearer.
So the problem is not so much your tariff but the very high consumption.
Obviously the main suspect for this high consumption is your electrical heating; especially when you have it on all through the night(thermostat or not).0 -
Those electric heaters are a !!!!!!. My ex housemate used to have one & our electric bill was triple in the winter compared to the summer so I think that is the root cause of your high bill.0
