How to fund life-changing move?

Hello everyone! After being unemployed for the last 3 years, I have been offered a job in mainland Europe. Very excited about it all, but am unsure as to fund this potential move. I have a feeling that if we walked into a bank and said "I need to borrow money to leave the country for ever" they would laugh us out the door!

Does anyone know what loans, if any, are available for this sort of thing? I mean, people emigrate all the time these days, surely there must some sort of way to fund it?

  • My only suggestions would be to sell anything you don't need to take with you to Europe or ask parents/grandparents if they can help you get started.

Could be tricky to get a loan for this! What else could you do to raise money? If relocating - could you literally sell everything and start from scratch? A friend of mine has gone to volunteer in South America and he gpt a surprisingly large amount of cash from selling everything - I bought a bike and some tools from him myself!

How quickly would you be paid by the new job? Any possibility of borrowing from friends and family? Could the new employer give you an advance on your salary?

How about asking your new employer for an advance to pay for your relocation?

Relocation expenses must be supplied if they are a half decent company..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

If the opportunity is worth having, they'll be able to either advance you some cash, or offer some relocation assistance

It really depends on what type of job you are looking at - a highly skilled worker may well be offered a relocation package, a new graduate or unskilled worker is unlikely to get anything of the sort.

Thanks everyone. It's only to work in a bilingual nursery, so doubt they would offer any sort of relocation costs :-\

We would sell everything we have, but no way would our meagre belongings cover such an expense. I know it's probably a stupid question before I ask it, but does the job centre offer something for this sort thing?
  • Sorry but not for out the UK - I know several people who've done it and, as others have said, it's funded by selling everything they don't need (house, car, furniture, clothes, toys etc etc). Best of luck
