Rhubarb growth

I planted a Rhubarb plant in March and it seemed to be growing well with new growth showing straight away then after the wet April the leaves seemed to be dying and it seemed to lose all vitality, I put this down to waterlogging although it is planted in a raised bed which should be free draining. I notice the other day after another deluge of rain that the plant has sprung back into life and is putting on new growth like mad, I hope that it continues and next year I can have some lovely Rhubarb and Apple pies.

They do seem to grow in growth spurts.

Whenever i leave my plot i try to give each plant a full watering cans worth of water and i reckon mine must be the largets at the allotment site and they are about 3 years old

I planted some rhubarb in jan and found it didn't start to grow for weeks and weeks! Guess it was working on a good root system. It now has 6 stalks but none are longer then about 30cm although they all seem happy if a little but chewed on by slugs.

Good luck with your rhubarb growing!

Amazing how those pesky slugs will even eat poisonous leaves.

Don't forget that, while rhubarb seems to handle neglect quite well, it responds even better when well fed (don't we all?). It likes high nitrogen feeds.
