Home Insurers that allow three policy holders

Just wondering which home insurance companies allow three policy holders?

I know Home Protect do but I'd like to compare their quote with some others, if there are any. I can't do this with the price comparison sites as they only allow you to input the details of two policy holders.

The third policy holder is 61 years old, retired, female, and has continually held Buildings & Contents insurance for 20 years with no claims in the last five years so will bring the quote down significantly.

My other half and I haven't made any claims in the last five years either but as we're employed and in our 20s we're considered a higher risk, naturally. Especially given my OH is a smoker :o

Just put the 61 year old and either you or your partner on? The policy will cover all your family anyway. I suspect if you try to get 3 policyholders on there, you'll massively reduce your options to the extent your unlikely to make a saving

But surely then if, say for example, my other half were to damage his laptop away from the home I wouldn't be able to put a claim in as it's his possession and proof of purchase is in his name?

Are you in a legal partnership? In which case no problem.

Is the older member of your trio an equal partner in the house (ie shares ownership with you and your OH?)

Basically my partner and I (not legally bound i.e. no marriage / civil partnership, just cohabiting) are buying a house with an annexe for my mother (the 61 year old, naturally).

She does not share in the ownership, but she isn't a "tenant" either as she does not pay rent.

She cannot be on the Building Insurance but can be on the contents insurance.

You may still be able to get three policyholders on an Aviva policy through a broker

It looks like your mum just needs contents insurance, and easy to find a policy where direct family members contents is included on a house contents policy.

    eg John Lewis.

What the OP is suggesting however, is that by having an elderly retired person on the insurance, the premiums will reduce.

Whilst it's not the same as car insurance, I did run 2 dummy quotes, and there was a price difference of about £30 between just me, and me and my retired father being named on the policy, so the theory is true in some cases.

However, as posted above, with no insurable interest (no share of ownership), your mother cannot be a policyholder in respect of the buildings insurance.

If you got £30 knocked off a contents policy (which is the issue here), then you went to a very expensive provider to find it in the first place!

The quote for my OH and I cheapest available was just over £450

With my mother as a third policy holder from home protect it was just over £300.

This is because it is a four bedroom detached, and we always pay extra to lower our excess and include AD cover and personal possessions cover. There are also some declared items (not claims, I mean expensive things that some ask to be declared i.e. £3,000 PC).
