for starters, run avg removal tool:-
    http://www.avg.com/gb-en/utilities.tpl-mcr8 top one on list

    uninstall windows defender completely..

then get XP up-to-date, it's still on SP2, you need SP3 and all the ones after that....

    then follow the sticky here:-
    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849

and use this thread for specific advice as you work through the things in this thread :)
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

  • Thanks dogmaryxx was about to say that.
I have updated vista just now though.

I cannot find windows defender to uninstall?

I have run the avg uninstaller - it opened a black window -c prompt?
and then closed - nothing else happened.

    Thanks for your help

As it's vista, just turn defender off within itself...

There were only traces, so AVG remover has probably done it's job...run hjt and post a new log, and any leftovers can be fixed in hjt :)

instructions on disabling defender are in the speedup sticky thread.

There's not a great deal of bloat visible in the log, google toolbar/update, yahoo toolbars, roboform, apple, supportsoft - As it's vista, I'd backup data, factory restore it from the Dell factory restore partition, uninstall mcafee or whatever AV came with it, disable defender, stick avast free on, do windows updates, put your data back

in HJT, tick and Fix all the (no file) and (file missing) entries.

if you have CCleaner (as part of the sticky, you can disable Defender by opening CCleaner > Tools > Startup and disabling it in there.

Reboot the pc and re-run and post HJT log :)

Unless you're still using an old-fashioned dial-up modem or using your computer as a fax machine, I'd get rid of this too

    C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe
How do I add a signature?

Dells come with a factory restore partition, and probably a method for creating the reinstall disc if you didn't get one with it - instructions are on the dell website - it will wipe all your data, so backup first.
