A bit of background, we (myself, husband and 2 children) have been lodging with family for over 2 years. We both work full time but due to childcare costs money is tight (our combined income as one salary would not take us into the higher tax bracket) and we have been unable to save anything. We also have a bad credit history.
We have been on the council housing list for 2 years in a higher priority band as we are lodging. We finally found out we had successfully bid on a property, they came and checked our wage slips (we assumed to check we could pay the rent) and we were told we should get the keys the same week. I phoned them back the following day to find out when we would get the keys to be told we earn too much money and can't have the property!!!
We have been told we can afford to buy/ private rent in this area. If we could we would have done this along time ago, it turns out this is a policy they have but don't bother to notify you until you get to the final stage. We have since been told the property has gone to someone else and that unless our income drops we will not be eligable for any future property. Basically we'd be better off on benefits - we won't be doing this.
I was wondering if anyone else has had any similar experience and what they have done. We are appealing their decision but it just feels as though we are banging our heads against a brickwall and getting no where.
Thanks.

Do you get any help with childcare via tax credits? Different situ, but my LHA was slashed when they looked at my tax credits, I had to provide full written evidence to the council that my tax credits were as they were due to nursery costs.
I have very little knowledge in this area at all, but I think you need to know actual figures, rather than just that you "earn too much" Ideally, in writing.0 -
Yes we get child tax credits. I have asked how much we can earn but they won't give out a figure as "everyone would make sure they were under it."
I didn't realise council limits were set so low and that they can behave so unprofessionally!! Looks like we are going to be lodging for a long while yet :mad:0 -
I think you might get more help with this on the benefits board to be honest-do you know how to post a link over there? Huge apologies if I am teaching a granny to suck eggs
