I just planted a new tree, an Acer maple, about 6 foot, typical young tree you would buy from a garden center.
While teasing out the roots, I accidentally split the two thickest roots, they look like the most important ones to me. I planted it anyway but it has been playing on my mind. I have now dug it up again to plant it further away from the fence, so before I do what shall I do about the split roots.

My options are to cut them just above the split and hope for the best, tape the split together using masking tape, in the hope that it bonds back together again before the masking tape breaks down in the soil or once again leave it alone.

Any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

The large roots in trees are mainly for support. I wouldn't worry about it. tape them up, or cut them off, not sure it matters so long as there are plenty of other roots to feed the tree

I decided to prune them, I am sure they will regrow anyway.

Right move - the split could let in disease wheras a clean cut is less likely to

When repotting any old pelargonium it is best to cut out the one big thick root, so you have done the equivalent of this with a tree
