Car Insurance Quotes - Diff in stating 'divorced' and 'Single'

Hi there

Wondering if anyone can help me, just been doing a search for my brother re car insurance quotes, he's divorced but if you put in single it comes up with a cheaper prices.

Is there any come back, does anyone know, if he puts single instead of divorced? Surely there is no difference cause he is single!!!

Thanks for your help in advance

Evidently those insurers showing a pricing difference have experience that says there is a difference.

The comeback if he lies on his application is if they find out then they cancel his policy for fraud and you'll then really the see the price increases! Plus they are most likely to check during a claim so if he's had a fault accident he could have a very big bill to pay to the Third Party which can run into the millions

But it is not a lie. He is both single and divorced.

Not so! If an insurance company issues 3rd party cover they must honour it.

yep, but if you lied to get the policy then, after they have paid out to the third party, they can come after you for reimbursement

OP, the question is ambiguous so I'd say any justifiable answer is ok.

So, me & my OH could go for "divorced" or "living together" because both are true and similarly your brother could go for "divorced" or "single" as both are true

it is an interesting difference though.
    How long are you "divorced"?
until one partner finds someone else.
until you re marry or what.
Imagine after a couple of relationships, still being tied to divorced. simply becase you never remarried, and don't have a partner at that point in time.

Single, then married. then divorced, then civil partnership or common law, maybe separated again, maybe married, maybe divorced, but you never go back to single. You only get that once.

ambiguous again, I'd say single applies to anyone on their own (who could also qualify as married, divorced, civil partnered, separated and/or widowed at the same time). Virgin is the only one you never get back and I've yet to see that on an insurance proposal

The question need to be "tick any that apply"" rather than "pick one"
