After some thought, I've decided not to use my home phone anymore, but to rely on my mobile from now on - after all, I can't remember when i last used my home phone, and the only incoming calls I get these days are from call centres trying to sell me useless junk!
I phoned Virgin, and told them that I no longer wanted the home phone on my package..
However, I was told that because I have the telephone, broadband and telly package allbeit the lowest option, that if I drop the phone, I could no longer get the discount for the complete package! i asked how much I would lose- £13.00, they said...
so.... If I dropped the home phone, I would save £13.90 line rental, BUT have to spend an extra £13.00 because I would lose my discount!! so, i'm stuck with a home phone that's no good for me!
Ah well, nice try!

Ever since the pre-Virgin days, only BB could be subscribed to without a phone. If you took TV, then the price included a phone line. If you declined the phone then you didn't get it, but the price remained the same - making it sensible to retain as it was effectively supplied at no cost.0
