I agree, in our area the midwife would have done the checks at home, or a gp would do a home visit. However I had to tranfer in after the homebirth anyway so they did them in hospital in the end.
I can recommend this yahoo group if you want some opinions from midwifes etc who have a lot of home birth experience http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/homebirthUK/

Just another perspective but when I had my last baby the post natal care was dreadful and even though my baby was not putting on weight as he should the midwives would cancel all home visits to weigh him and check me over. I sent hours on the phone on the first few weeks trying to get people out to see him (GP had no baby scales so couldn't do it) and it was a blessed relief to finally be given the name and address of a real midwife clinic to physically take him too, where he was promptly sent straight to hospital and admitted for a week.

Personally if you know they will be difficult about doing this at home I'd find it far less stressful to take him somewhere you know a doctor will be at a time you choose rather than wait in for a home visit which doesn't happen then spend 2 days on the phone shouting about it to try to get it to take place.

Nicki, I totally understand why you say that, but this is the problem isn;t it? The service is watered down or made impossible to access, women are forced to accept a dreadful alternative, and so they then cancel the original service altogether.

The only way to stop this happening is to make a stand. Maternity services are a disgrace as it is - it appals me that they are continuing to get worse.
