ive just spent the last week doing the garden. i got some new untreated/painted railway sleepers and some Ronseal fence life 9lt from B&Q.

i put 3 coats on the sleepers and also repainted the fence and bird table in the Ronseal.

ive woke up this morning to watch the paint dripping off the bird table and also coming off the sleepers were i rub them with a cloth?! the fence is also looking a bit ropey in patches!

to be fair i painted over the faded stain on the bird table but did use two coats so maybe it hasnt taked to the wood. but the sleepers were untreated before i started.

my question is two fold, firstly, way is it doing this as surely thats whats its designed for and secondary, what can i use to fix the problem?

granted it wasnt expensive at £10 a tub but its the time and effort spent doin it which has annoyed me.

thanks.

If its running that much maybe it could be entered for that money making venture they call the Olympics ;)

I am not sure its designed for sleepers though. I had some on a new feathered fence and most of it took apart from the bits on the top and post caps same type of wood.

I found stain doesn't take well to plained wood like on my bird table

We've just done the same thing with sleepers but we used as oil based stain because OH didn't think water based would soak in properly...ours looks lovely but was twice the cost.

We bought a new fence last week and did the whole fence (15 panels of 6x5 foot each) with Ronseal fence life (water based). Ours was the spray on version and we only did one coat. Its come out lovely although is a little bit patchy in places. That's my bad painting though, not the paint. we could have gone over it but didn't bother because it looks really nice.

not sure what wood your bird bath is but it sounds like it hasn't soaked in. perhaps you need to sand it down thoroughly and used oil based stain?
