You'll find out when the sun shines (if it ever does again!). Rear screens are pretty useless in bright sunlight - even the best of them.0 -
Oh thank you, never thought to try the viewfinder in sunlight. As you say the rear screens are useless. Thanks again, I've taken a few iffy ones in sunlight lol.0

Well, to update you all - and thanks again for your considered advice - in the end I went for a refurbished Panasonic TZ8 from ebay, for £90 & p&p. I really wanted a small camera which would fit into a pocket or bag, and the seller company has almost 100% reviews and a decent track record, so I'm pretty confident in them.
The camera had really decent reviews and because it only has 12 MP, it doesn't suffer as badly from the effects of higher MP which many of the other compacts do.
For under £100, I can see just how creative I want to be, and then expand properly as suggested by others in this thread if I do get the 'bug'.
Now, I need to get a bag and memory card; I hope you can advise further on the card in particular.
I note reference to different class cards. What class would you advise should be the minimum I look for? Unlikely to be doing much videoing, if any, and the burst photo setting on the TZ8 isn't very long.0 -

Good choice, Yorkie - I hope you take thousands of good pictures with it!
Your handbook specifications will tell you which is the minimum speed card but frankly the differences in price are so small that I would buy the fastest you can afford. I found an Integral Class 10 16GB on Amazon for just under £9 for my new 'play camera' (a Canon) and something like that would do you fine.Don't risk a 'no brand' card and beware of mysteriously cheap big brand ones on Fleabay. Apparently, so I have been warned, there are a lot of fakes on the market.
Thanks for keeping us informed, it's always nice to know how these sagas end!.0 -
Thanks, A.Badger ... Amazon here I come0
