Travel Insurance cancellation due to no baby?

I am traveling to New Zealand at the end of this year as my son's girlfriend is having a baby. I will be taking out travel insurance but my question is if she miss-carries or the baby is aborted for any reason will the travel insurance cover the cost of cancellation of the flights? The 12 week scan has been done and everything looks fine for now.

Thanks.

I very much doubt it. Disinclination to travel for whatever reason is not an insurable risk

Your 'insurance' would be to buy a fully refundable ticket - when you see the price I doubt you'd want to go down this route

what a horrible thing to say - nice to see you are considering your finances over the health of your unborn grandchild - oh no what if she has an abortion or the baby dies naturally will I get my money back?! if either situation were to arise it would be very sad and most people certainly would not be thinking about money in that instance - in fact wouldn't you still want to visit to offer them support?

On the contrary, I think it's a perfectly reasonable question, and I think you are being very harsh on the OP.

Pretty much all travel insurance is to cover potentially 'very sad' situations, and in the vast majority of cases those claiming would, given the choice, much prefer that whatever has happened that has given rise to the claim hadn't occurred. As you say, health is more important than finances. But ill health (or even death) abroad is often costly, and the purpose of travel insurance is to ensure that people don't have financial worries on top of an already difficult and stressful time.

Travel to New Zealand is very expensive, and if the reason for the OP going is to be around for a new born baby, it's understandable to me that the OP may want the flexibility to rearrange (or cancel) their travel plans if anything untoward should unfortunately happen during the pregnancy, and be looking for insurance that would potentially allow them to do that.

After all, how do you think the poor parents-to-be would feel if the grandparents turned up as planned shortly after the potential birth date, in a scenario where they had actually lost the baby six months before ?

    Just ignore this, OP.

This is a money saving website, your thread asks a perfectly acceptable question, but some people like this see it as a place to do a bit of totally unnecessary sermonising,

(You won't be able to find any travel insurance to offer the cover you are looking for)

Thank you for your answers, to be honest I assumed that we would not be able to insure against that unfortunate problem. We hope that all will be well and we can have a great time with our new grand-child, if not it will be a holiday in NZ calling in on them for a few days to visit.

    Again, thanks.

It's expensive travelling to New Zealand, and certainly if I had to do it, it would be a one-time event. If the youngsters are wishing to have a family then they would want to try again if the worst happened, but maybe the grandparents would no longer have the money to visit.
It's a perfectly sensible thing to consider, and if I were in the situation of the youngsters I would rather the grandparents came for the a future child.
