Is my payslip correct!

Hi

I stated work about 6 weeks ago after being off since Feb, I am working for an agency temping as a receptionist for 20 hours per week, I am on 7.30 per hour, I am actually picking up 116.80 per week, on my wageslip I pay no NI and 29.20 income tax, I have given them my new tax code that was sent to me, I posted it on but on my slip it says tax code BR1, can anyone clarify that this is correct as my friend thinks I should be picking up more.

thanks

sam

    From the revenue site

BR - Is used when all your income is taxed at the basic rate - currently 20 per cent (most commonly used for a second job or pension but may also be used if you’ve started a new job, don’t have a form P45 and haven’t completed a form P46 before your first pay day)

For those eligible for the basic Personal Allowance - 810L for the 2012-13 tax year. It is also used for 'emergency' tax codes

You tax is correct for the BR code but if you should be on the standard allowance (810L) you should not be paying any tax on that level of income.

Tax allowance for this year is £8105, so if this is your only job you shouldn't be paying any tax. What tax code did the tax office give you? If this is your only job and you have no other taxabe income then it loks like your employer hasn't updated their records.

Hi They gave me 810L which I handed to the agency, shall I email them and tell them this is wrong, or will it work itself out, how will I get that tax back???

    thanks again for your help!!

No harm in checking with them to make sure they have the info needed. You should get any overpayment back with your pay once the new tax code has been applied.

If this was a notice of coding sent to you then an employer cannot use it, they require more than just the tax code, they also need details of any previous pay and tax in the year or confirmation that there was none. They can only act on a P45 from you or a P6 from the tax office direct to them for this information; so in the first case do you have a P45 if not what were you doing before starting this job?
If you had no P45 then your employer should have asked you to fill in a P46 which would then be used to put you onto an emergency code (on your earnings, assuming this is your only job, no tax would be due) and to advise the tax office that you now worked there so they could issue a P6.

It was what was sent to me when I was no longer signing on, I kept one part and the other was for my new employer, this is my only job, I finished work in Feb, temping maternity cover, claimed income based job seekers until this position, so I am guessing I gave the agency the correct paperwork!

The form which comes with a part to be retained and parts to be passed to the new employer would be a P45.

Did the form look like this - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/p45.pdf ?

I phoned the tax office when mine was wrong when I started my job. They sorted it very quickly for me.

The phone number is 0845 300 0627 and have your national insurance number with you.

If this is your first month at work it may just be that the payroll department haven't received your tax code in time and so worked it out on the basic rate. I've had this before and then the following month received a refund.
