Anyway to improvise meshing on a trailer

Just bought a 5x3 trailer but it didn't come with meshing. What is the best way to improvise this to get extra volume - can I put up wood or wire fencing and attach this to the side to hold in the contents?

Don't know what you intend to carry but polymer rope netting tied down around the edges might fit the bill.

Its only 5x3 for a good reason, Its probably got a low weight loading margin.

Using wood to increase the height will eat into the gross trailer weight.

Ive got one, 250kg gross laden weight. Thats all good until you think it weighs 75kg. Then add a few more kg for the spare wheel and carrier.
Locks, straps and cover = a bit more.

If i carry more than 2 bars of aero chocolate i weight it all 1st. :)

Bungee straps from the auto shop. £1.50 to £3 depending on length and very strong and come with proper clips not the usual bendy metal.

Warning!! Bungee cords are dangerous and if it catches you in the gentleman's area it !!!!! hurts... :)

You can, but as has been mentioned, you may need to watch the weight. You also need to make sure that whatever you do is secure and not likely to create a hazard for other road users.

are you doing a bit of tree lopping den?
  • Yeah I'm felling a few trees and cayying away branches and leaves - if I could get 100% more in - I' already using the grappling hooks to hold it in and have got good with 3 of them, and am still testing their tolerances at holding quite a big load. I couldn't afford anything bigger regrettably.

Its not a case of what you can afford but what you're licenced to tow and what the weight combination allows you to carry.

Just because you can fit it in the trailer doesn't mean its legal to carry that much. When I carried hardboard from the docks, I could get about 75 tonnes of it on the back of my trailer. Doesn't make it legal.

I have noticed since the local skip refused entry to commercial vehicles (without a permit) the numbe of cars with trailers has increased significantly.

Not a problem but nowone seems to be able to reverse these into a space. This morning at 8am there were 7 of them there all arriving first thing so they could find an easy space to park in.

Small unbraked trailer, Its going to be overloaded carrying that stuff.

The wheelbearings will need replacing very often.

5 x 3 trailer, about 300kg to 500kg. So wood is about 14kg per cubic foot, so 20 to 35 cubic feet. So up to 2.3 feet high for a 500kg trailer, every if it's cut into squares wth no space inbetween. Should fit a fair few trees, branches and leaves in, without overloading , as there'll be a lot of air space in there.
  • Buy a couple of sheets of thickish plyboard(should get a length and an end out of each sheet), cut them to size depending on how high you want the sides of the trailer to be, but small enough so they can lay flat inside it when you don't need to use them(won't lose them that way).Bolt some 1"x1" wood in the corners of the trailer for them to slot into.
