Is it tp late to plant Potatoes?
As is it say (well nearly - can't edit title), is it to late to plant tatties?
I've got a bit ground, it was over grown, been cleared down now and to break up the soil I've been told to get the tatties in. Had a quick look in BM store today, couldn't see any.
Is it worth it, or would I be better off looking at other ways to improve it? Its an area 8 x 12M, wouldn't plan on doing the whole lot, but certainly give a part over now, any other things to plant to help the soil?

I've come to the conclusion, with our unpredictable seasons, it's never too late to plant potatoes

First week of June, you can go for a nice late variety and get massive harvest ....0 -
No it's not too late to put spuds in, I put some first earlies in later than this last year, but IMHO the only way they break up the ground is by you digging them out! I'd use a green manure on the whole area.0

When you say benefit the soil what do you actually mean?
Does it need breaking up/more nutrients etc?0 -
Get yourself along to a 'proper' garden centre they should have some seed potatoes left....probably well sprouted as well.
Might also get them a bit cheaper cos they will want rid of them.0 -
try them in a spud bag or in a cold frame if you have one to start with .. as well as plant them outside in the ground.. this will give you a good chance of getting something..
I have 2 bags on the go and 1 5ftx1ft patch on the go as well.. but these were planted a while ago..
Bags are the way to go.. if your council have given you the white recycle bags these are good to use.. they are not water proof as they will allow the water to drain off slowly.. will be using mine soon!God helps make my veggie patch grow. He provides everything I need.. It only fails if I do NOT do as He has told me!!
Imagine if Christianity spread like swine flu... how much better the world would be!! God Bless!0 -
I'm pleased to have read this, fiddling about in the garage today I noticed the two egg trays of potatoes that have been chitting for weeks and weeks - they were half price in the garden centre at the end of April, 1st earlies, but they're clearly going to be late if I ever do get them into bags!0

Bung 'em in they will grow like h*ll !!0

Need to go like Annie says, earlies. They grow quicker than maincrop or "lates" as you call them but as for a "massive harvest" I think that's wishful thinking.I've come to the conclusion, with our unpredictable seasons, it's never too late to plant potatoes
