Flat Tyre on new bike after one ride

Hi all,

I bought a bike from Halfords and after one use the front tyre has gone flat and I have pumped it back up but goes flat again.

Not sure if it makes any difference but it was "off the shelf bike" as in a display model I took away. As I thought as it had not been ridden would be the same as one out of a box. Compared to say a TV which has been on all opening hours as a display model.

I assume the warranty does not cover wear and tear as a flat tyre would be and am guessing it is probably my own problem now but after one ride it is a bit annoying and it's not like theres a nail sticking out of it or anything hehe.

Thanks for your help,

Matt.

put a drop of water on the valve, if it bubbles then you have a leaky valve - so you might have some sway with halfords on getting a new innertube fitted for free

however, its most likely that you have gotten a puncture on your first ride, so just buy a new tube and diy - puncture points are never obvious, and if you dont find the thorn in the tyre when you change the tube, you will have another puncture on your next ride

Inner tubes are inexpensive and easy to fit so whether you go back to Halfords really depends on whether it is within a convenient distance to you. If you do it yourself then just make sure you thoroughly check the tyre to make sure there isn't anything sharp in it that will puncture it again.

I'm not sure how Halfords would deal with it, but any company with an ounce of sense would not argue this over something so easy and cheap to sort out. The goodwill this would generate would alone pay for it.

Whether or not Halfords has any culpability in this instance, it's a great opportunity to learn how to fix a puncture. Which is what you've got. Inner tubes are cheap, puncture repair kits even cheaper.

You can get a puncture the first time you ride a bike, or the 1000th time. This is a DIY job, not a consumer rights issue, methinks.

I found the self-adhesive puncture repair patches much easier.

I made the mistake with my last puncture by not checking for another (bucket of water method) and had to yank the inner tube out again!!!!

i dont know what this is but someone i know who cycles daily has some jelly goo in his tyres so never has a puncture
maybe this is the way forward if the wife doesnt like the forks being scratched from the utensil tray?

Also run your finger around the inside of the tyre itself, it's annoying how often you might find something actually embedded in the tyre (so you fix the puncture, but as soon as you put the inner tube back in you get another).
I learned that trick with my mothers mobility scooters, after fixing the same tyre twice in a row and spotting a bit of a thorn just sticking through the inner edge of the tyre.
