First Choice Holiday

Just after a little advice.
I booked an holiday last September which included a free child place and the balance is due on Tuesday.
During the time since booking the holiday I have contacted First Choice a few times to change and add things to my holiday. On each occasion I have spoken to them they have informed me that I could change/add and amend things using there on-line system.
Therefore before going to pay my balance today I have logged on and tried to upgrade my room. However once I had pressed the upgrade button the holiday price went up by £400 even though the upgrade was free.
I have contacted first choice and after speaking with 5 different people they informed me the extra charge was due to losing my free child place when I upgraded the room.
Even though they told me to use their system to make any upgrade they are now telling me I have lost my free child place. I have informed them I wont be paying them any more money and they have arranged for somebody to ring me tomorrow.
I would just like to get advice off anybody who's suffered the same problem or any advice how to play it when they make contact with me.
I can't afford to pay £400 extra and will have a very upset family, therefore any advice would be great.

There is normally a clause that states special discounts/ offers cannot be combined, but it is difficult to say whether that is the case without seeing the site (which I assume is secure?).

Would you be willing to stay in the non upgraded room, as a compromise to not paying the money?

    Firstly thanks for the reply.
The upgrade wasn't really an upgrade it was just a little extra space for a cot. I have told them if it's going to change my holiday cost I don't want it. They stated that's fine though the free child place might not be there any-more and I will just have to speak with a Team Leader in the morning.
