Is Virgin Media's Phone size XL (Talk Unlimited) actually 'UNLIMITED'?
Calls are restricted to up to one hours duration - if they run over the hour you have to pay!

I think they're all the same:

    Evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls for those on BT Together Option 1 are 5½p for up to 60 minutes (3p per minute if you go over the hour);

Evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls for those on Primus Saver Option 2 CPS are free for up to 90 minutes (1p per minute if you go over 90 minutes).

Hang up and redial when you get near 55/85 minutes!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Hi

Does that mean when you go over the hour that they charge you for the whole hour plus the extra time or just the extra time? Sorry to be thick:rolleyes:

Sorry just read the link : free for 1st hour then 3p per minute

you're charged as soon as you go over the hour
  • The point I'm trying to make is that they are not really doing a completely unlimited deal!
The deal is UNLIMITED as to how many calls you can make, but the call lengths are LIMITED (up to 59mins, then hang up & redial again!) So you can't really 'Talk Unlimited' because you are 'limited'!!

Am I splitting hairs here? or are they not really providing what they say they are, as in 'UNLIMITED'??!!
  • Maybe that's why VM are now calling it 'Size XL' with Talk Unlimited in brackets, which is probably left over from the Telewest days, when the deal was REALLY unlimited - talk for however long as you want at no extra charge other than the monthly payment!

Agreed but at least subscribers can make an unlimited number of calls even if they are limited to 59 minutes for no additional charge.

Compare that with so-called unlimited broadband!

Is it worth the extra £14 a month you pay on top of the basic £11 package to get it. Bearing in mind you pay it monthly in advance whether you use it or not. EG When your Away on Holiday . I suspect some people might be better off using an alternative call supplier in many cases.

    Also Phone Coop http://www.thephone.coop/residential/telephone/anytime.html
offer an anytime call package which is open to NTL Media ex cable customers, which is accessed by a short code and this only costs £9.99p a month.

That is technically correct and I do agree with you but the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) has stated it's ok to still refer to it as unlimited. The reason being (apparently) is that the 59min per call limit (which by the way is pretty-much standard these days) is a FUP (fair use policy) which the companies generally claim this is to ensure high standards and it's not over-used like some businesses may do.
