Two days on and just beginning to think it was cured.

Turned on laptop & opened browser then noticed, after I'd clicked a link, that there was no connection.

Just wondered - could my impatience - i.e. opening the browser & trying to load a web page before the connection is complete be causing the problem?

It was probably less than a second after the login screen had cleared when I maximized the already open browser screen and clicked on a shortcut.

I don't use suspend/hibernate much, but I seem to remember it takes a good few seconds (maybe 10s?) after the display comes up before the various adapters are re-initialised...

Quite probable. The desktop has to load and all devices have to be woken up to the state they were in prior to hibernating.

Reboot and time how long it takes from the desktop opening to the network icon showing an internet connection. Then hibernate, wake and do the same.
How do I add a signature?

Despite my suspicions that they were making it up(!), I set the router to always assign a particular IP address to the Windows 7 PC, and on that PC manually specified the same IP address (rather than using DHCP) and it resolved the problem...

How do you tell your router to assign a static ip address? And how do you give a pc a static ip address?

Not being very technically minded (which is why I came asking here in the first place) I've found this a good tool when given advice.

Sometimes the queries need to be worded slightly differently but it's not failed to answer my questions.

Only reason I came on here to start with is I didn't know the right questions to ask.

Presumably you also have an ethernet adapter in the laptop but are not using it. Try disabling that. I've had the same problem with a Win 7 machine not having internet access after waking from hibernation. It started when I used the ethernet port to share my internet connection with another machine without wireless. Disabled the adapter and problem disappeared. Reconfigured it as before and it started working with no repeat of the problem.
You do have to wait a while for the wireless connection to establish itself though. Can't jump straight into a browser after waking the computer up and access the web, have to wait, but only around 10 seconds or so and I can see the status of the connection in the taskbar.
