Very - Can I exchange goods bought with a discount code?

I recently received a promotional code for £30 off a £60 spend. I bought £64 worth of goods but my daughter didn't like an item, costing £20, when it arrived. I e-mailed Very about this and was told to contact them once the item had been returned and I could exchange for something else (I think, frustratingly I can't find that msg now). I returned the item but have now been told I can't reuse a code unless an item was faulty. Is this correct?
