Google Chrome keeps crashing

Again, I had to re-boot to get my internet browser working again. I tried opening Internet Explorer and the same thing so it may not be Chrome that is causing the problem. I would have thought that ending task in task manager would have sorted the problem. It's infuriating, especially when the whole thing takes near 5 mins to fully boot.
There must be another way to get it showing without re-starting ?0 -
you have a browser hijacker or some other malware, these always screw with the browser0
-
I use Clary Utilities to sort issues like that out so I don't think it is anything like that.0

Chrome and all the associated crap that comes with it uses more memory than IE, an xp machine with 1GB shouldn't be slow, follow the speedup guide linked to in your other thread.!!

Do you by any chance of Rapport installed? I had issues a long time ago with Chrome frequently crashing and it turned out to be Rapport (the online banking security software). Had to uninstall it and then update it. This program seems to add itself to all your browsers for your security. I haven't bothered with it since getting new laptops.0
-
Yes, I recently did get Rapport. That could be it then.
I also get a blue screen now and again when the whole computer crashes and re-starts. This isn't funny if you are in the middle of something important. This has happened before I got Rapport. I will uninstall it.0 -
You've already been advised on the best approach to take to solve your issues.
Seriously - don't try to paper over the cracks, just nuke the machine and restart.0 -
I don't want to wipe the whole system and start again. Too scary, even if I back up I may overlook something. It will still be a slow and limited machine after all that.0
-
It won't, it wasn't slow when you bought it, doesn't have to be slow now.
A disk image is a backup of everything, which means data won't be overlooked.
You don't have to wipe it to speed it up.!!

I have tried some of the things in the list here suggested but it didn't really make much difference.
As this PC is 8 years old, surely the motherboard could go at any time as they only have so long a life. The PSU has a fan that sometimes doesn't start resulting in a gentle tap to get it going. It gets very hot very quick when it stops. I have taken it apart and cleaned it up but it still stops from time to time.0
