Overpayment tax credits

I got a demand for payment from Hmrc, Blackpool c.April 2011 looking for over £700 with a follow up a couple of weeks later. I lost the letters and have heard nothing from them since. would I be better off phoning them to find out what it was about or should I wait for them to contact me again. Is interest added if you leave it? Not trying to avoid paying but am not too sure if I owe anything.

I would ring them, and then whatever they say ask them to write you a letter outlining this. Unfortunately things get lost in their system and they might send you another letter out of the blue saying you still owe money. Or they might tell you the case was shut, in which case you can sit back and relax.

I would contact them because at the moment a lot of unpaid ops are just being passed to collection agencies if no contact has been made.

Glass angel, you are probably better off starting a new thread so people can give you advice. I am sorry to hear of your situation.
