Hi there.
I have a windows vista pc which I had to do a full restore on recently.
Now I can't tell you how full the disc was before I restored but now it is nearly full and showing in red, which it wasn't before.
How can I see what is taking up all the space? I'm wondering if I've got lots of duplicates going on. I've got a few music files and some photo's and a few small documents through office which I've re-installed and it's taking up nearly all of my 218gb space. Surely that can't be right?

You are correct that isn't right. When you did the restore did you delete/format the old partition?0

Better to 'upgrade' to Win 7, at least you dont need a Cray XM-P to run the O/s on its own like you do with VISTA...............**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. You probably won't want to hear this, but by far the best route would be to backup important data and repeat the restore, but this time delete the partition. How do I add a signature?0

No I didn't.
Is there anything I can do now? I'd really rather not spend lots to upgrade.
Yes
download this:
http://www.partition-tool.com/landing/home-download.htm
and CAREFULLY identify the unwanted partition, delete it and resize the active one.**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. If any Parking Pirates have a problem with my post then contact me for my solicitors address.*****0 -

You're assuming the restore created a new partition. I'm assuming the re-installation has gone onto the original partition, and it created a windows.old folder. How do I add a signature?0 -

Yes, he needs to establish which its done, but running that will identify any partitions without logical drive letters.
He could also use the Windows Administrative Tools Disc Manager utility to see what partitions there is**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. That's a fairly risky strategy to take without knowing their level of competence,
i would first off have gone for a less risky approach..
Could you run the Command prompt window as Administrator,
then run this command, and let us know what it tells you,
done like this..
Click on Vista 'Start' button.
In the Start Search box, type in “Cmd” (without quotes).
Right click on the Command Prompt in the search result listing.
In the right click menu, click on 'Run as Administrator'
That will open a black window, now could you copy / paste this into the window, then press the Enter key.
vssadmin list shadowstorage
So can you tell us the result of that, or maybe copy it from that window and paste it here in the forum
to do that
Right-click anywhere in the Command Prompt Window, and click 'Select All'
Press {ENTER}.
The output is now copied to the Windows clipboard and you can paste it into Notepad or the forum.

Well, since he's just done a restore, the worst that can happen is he screws up the wrong partition, but since theres a good bet he may well have to mess about with the partitions anyway. and the machine has nothing on it that cant be restored, then he hasnt much to lose, but yes, he could try your method first, but im sure the syntax is "vssadmin list shadows"
I just like to cut to the chase**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. If any Parking Pirates have a problem with my post then contact me for my solicitors address.*****0
