The reason for this is all data has a value, and if (say) the rules changed that allowed data retention for 10, rather than 6 years - the 'old' data would magically appear.
I very much doubt any such change in the law would be retrospective. If it were, then banks etc would have to "find" all those bank statements and documents that they had disposed of.
I would also dispite what you say with regards to data post 6 years on credit files.No Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.
