Don't forget, Win 8 is MS's belated attempt at a tablet OS. They are about 4 years too late, with Android leading the market share, Apple trailing-in 2nd and RIM in 3rd place with what is the fastest OS I have ever seen. Buying QNX was a superb move.

Will Microsoft succeed with W/8 ?. Most home users are so ingrained with the MS OS they will use it regardless. Of course, what will make/break this version will be Microsofts attitude to responding to user feed-back. If the corporate bods want a desktop and start button and one isn't provided, they will look elsewhere. This will hurt MS really badly.
As for Cloud computing, if business users switch to server-hosted, run-in-a-browser software, then the OS becomes irrelevant. It will be this that kills MS.

  • The problem is MS is old hat and too late. The emphasis in the last 15 years has switched to the internet and online services, Google latched onto this, MS didnt and carried on trying to sell o/s's and software on disc. Google now has the edge on MS, and I can see Google becoming e the MS of the 21st century.

Is this latest pre-release much different to the developer pre-release that was out around last autumn ?? If not, don't think I'll bother....the whole metro thing stinks worse than a pile of stinky stuff...

...and I don't like touch screen devices of any description, including iThings, so Metro - NO !!!!!!

...and TBH, I can't see it working generally in the corporate environment at all....hell, some companies can't go away from IE6 as the cost of re-doing existing software and licences would just be too prohibitive..
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

A tried 8 for an hour and i cant understand why any desktop user running 7 would want to upgrade..
It was an early beta version but it gave me the general idea where they are going with 8 and frankly they can keep it.

A cant understand why they have kinda ignored their core users needs in a market they dominate, yet have based 8 on a market they have no say in at present.!
If they wanted to break into the tablet market then building a tablet OS would be a good idea, building a "one size fits all" OS will annoy desktop users who dont want a touch based system..
Tablet users want a light, easy to use OS with app stores rather than heavy legacy programs that will be crap on a tablet..
They have failed to understand what made people want to use the iPad..
A can't see the business world lining up to upgrade to 8 in a hurry.lol
They have just finished moving from XP and retraining staff on how to use 7, a can't see them wanting to go through that pain again..

Remember all the fuss people kicked up about Vista having too many changes, they aint seen nothing yet compared to what awaits them with 8..

If MS want to stay competitive in the future then they need to give Ballmer the boot and start bringing in some innovation for their core users..
MS wont get away with being sloppy anymore, theres too much competition now threating Windows..

Windows 8 Release Preview has a major change over the previous releases, it requires the NX option in BIOS to be enabled. So you need to check the following before trying to install on systems which may only be a couple of years old. It also appears that the release is checking which processor is installed, and although some have the necessary capability, MS have failed to include some quite powerful cpu's. Some of us are already waiting for SP1!!!!

To install Windows 8 Release Preview on your PC, the processor (CPU) must support the following features: Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2. Most CPUs have support for these features, so if you receive this error, it is likely because the NX feature is not enabled on your system.

To resolve this error, follow manufacturer guidelines to enable NX (“No eXecute bit”), or the equivalent XD (“eXecute Disabled”) feature, within the BIOS security settings.

If the BIOS setting for the NX support option is not available on your system, you may need to contact the manufacturer for updating the BIOS. Note that some older processors may not contain these features and will be incompatible with Windows 8 Release Preview.

Similarly, if you are using a virtualization product to install a Windows 8 Release Preview virtual machine (VM) and receive this error (or error 0xC0000260), you must enable PAE (or PAE-NX) in the virtualization product’s settings or configuration manager when setting up the Windows 8 virtual environment.

PS Perhaps I should add that you may be able to get around this problem by downloading an ISO version, burn to disk, and do a clean (not upgrade) install: see here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/iso

    QED.

    AS I said:

    1. Never use a windows version with an even number

    2. Never use a version until SP3 comes out.

This is knowledge gleaned from 25 years building LANS, WANS and standalone systems.

Thanks, I hit this problem even though I have the Q6600 cpu with nx on - ISO install is the way to go - this is a product key from an MS website
