He also shouldn't have requested a service without knowing about any charges. I would get the negotiation hat on for this one if the company continue to expect payment.

The onus is not on him to know that the company would charge him for a quote.

    Quite.

Apart from the fact that he didn't request any service at all. The thread title should be a clue.

I wouldn't offer anything for a quote. That's all that has happened here. The customer asked the supplier for a quote to produce a sign, and they gave one. They didn't produce a sign, which was what was asked for. Anything else they have supplied is merely part of the quote. (Unless the customer asks for the cad files, to produce it elsewhere)

Depends whether the company has actually done any work i suppose ? If they've sent a bill for design work, it sounds as though they have. We don't have the companies side of the story.

Doing work does not a contract make.

The analogy I would use is a householder rings up a local builder and says I would like a wall built. Can you give me a quote to build a wall that looks like this drawing. The builder then pops around when he is out, rips his fence down and then asks for £100 as he has done some of the work.

No doubt they have but they should have made it a bit clearer that they expected payment in return for their suggestions. Anyone who does something for which they expect payment without agreeing terms first is a fool. What then? They just send some random bill? That will be £100 please. That will be £1000 please. That will be a billion pounds please. Without a contract, it's all a bit unenforceable and opportunistic.

TBH, they sound rather amateur if they're not clear about what they will, and won't, do for what price.

Not that I think op should pay but I think somewhere in the sales of goods act is a part which states where a price must be fair where no price has been otherwise presented, so they couldn't just turn round and ask for obscene amounts of money. Might try fond the exact workday if I get time

Firm has now sent snotty letter accusing neighbour of criminal and immoral behaviour, and demanding payment. What are neighbour's rights?

The iPhone doesn't have a spell check actually (at least that I know off). It has predictive text though so if you click space it assumes the recommended word is correct- making it easy to miss these things if you're multi-tasking.
