New Fence Quote

Hi all

I have been quoted £1400 for a new fence. This includes concrete posts and concrete gravel boards, with feather edge boards. The length is around 18/19 Meters.

The whole boundary needs to be dug up and our neighbour has quite a bit of stuff/roots which need to be taken out, we have a small tree that will be dug up too. They said they will clear the mess.

The fence is shared so the cost would be shared between us and the neighbour.

Does this sound reasonable for outskirts of london? How much would the materials typically cost?

Any advice welcome.

Thanks in advance

    Obviously the guys that quoted have a better understanding of what's to be done than me, but I'd say it sounds conceivable....possibly a few hundred quid over?

    i paid if i remember correct around £1300 3 years ago, about 80ft in length, concrete posts, 6ft fence panels and 6" gravel boards, we live in the north.
    think the price of panels has gone well up in price since then as well.

    Depends on the panels you are using but sounds about right. Might be able to get it cheaper but not much from a decent firm.

    Other option is plant up some hedging and wait for it to grow.

    Far cheaper but slower.

    Where did the idea of panels come from? OP clearly said featheredge.

    Cheers

    About 5 years ago, I had a 20/21 metre run of feather-edge fence built, with concrete posts but with wooden gravel board. It cost about £2,000 pouunds. Does the quote include a top rail?

    worked out at the time the price of materials, concrete posts,gravel boards,sand,cement gravel, 2-3 men worked for days new posts were a different width to old posts so plenty of old concrete to take out(whoever did the previous fencing had put massive amounts of concrete round the old wood posts), tree roots etc to take out, they did an excellent job so didnt feel like i got fleeced.

    :o:o:o

    Sorry about that, it's just that I have always done these jobs myself and never cease to be amazed at how much other folks have to pay or rather what I save myself:money:

    Putting the costs talked about here into perspective, I am just completing a retaining wall between myself and the neighbour "above".

    The wall is 29mtrs long and varies in height, ie, is steped to follow the slope, of between 1mtr and 1.7mtr above my drive.

    The wall is 12"at base tapering to 11"at the top
    It is natural stone on my side, concrete block to the inner face and infilled with wet run concrete, and capped in natural stone it's solid.

    Total cost to me to take don the old wall, dig out substandard foundations, and rebuild with correct drainage will be £2250 provided we don't need a 4th 10 ton skip.

    That's :money::money::money:, labour costs hey?

    we used to maintain fence ourselves and replace wood posts and panels but to replace the full lot was such a big job. didnt have the time or energy.
    i got the measurments wrong when i said 80ft. its actually 100ft

    Sounds about right to me -just had 60ft length fence done.
    Materials were:-
    10 X double pailing fence panels with top rail = £260
    11 X 8ft high concrete 'H' posts + 11 X 2ft high gravel boards = £220
    Ready mix + tool hire £85
    Total = £565 for materials

    Labour was:-
    Removing old fence/posts/concrete + erecting new (I man for 1 week) = £700

    Total £1265 - excellent job, really pleased!
