Fraud and Debit / Credit Card for online payments?

I've just received a call from First Direct to say that they managed to stop some fraudulent activity on my card which would have equated to over £1000 coming out of my account! They couldn't, however, stop two payments that were made that totalled £50 - I'll have to open up a dispute and hope that I get it back.
Anyway, with this in mind I was wondering when paying for stuff online is it best to use a debit or credit card or is there little difference in my rights when fraudulent activity has occurred on my card.

I'm not sure of the exact differences but I would use a credit card online and then any money they spend is the banks not yours, so your not out of pocket whilst they investigate.0
