ppi

Hi all, i just had a telephone call, couldn't catch the name of the company although i asked several times (usual, indian accent). He told me that i took out a loan for £5000 with Barclays in 2002 - 2007 and that £1500 of it was ppi and that he could get me £2000 back. Now i keep hearing about this in the news etc but the thing is i have no recollection of having any loan let alone with Barclays (unless my husband took one out) The only thing i ever had with them was an Isa once.

So can some kind person tell me what they are up to, is there some sort of scam that you all know about and i don't?

I put the phone down in the end because i couldn't understand him too well and vise versa!!

The PPI claims companies ring people and say all sorts to try to get you to sign up. Better to get the info and do the claim yourself as they charge huge amounts for what you can do yourself for nothing (well postage costs only lol).

If you think you may have had a loan with barclays you can get the info direct yourself.

Thanks Ali, thats the thing i can't remember taking out a loan but they seem to insist that we did. What would be the point of them calling me if they weren't sure we had a loan ???

Ring Barclays anyway and ask if you had a Loan, get Husband to do the same just in case.

The only people who know what credit you had or PPI, are you, the Credit agency and the company you took the Loan with.
If you had PPI and were mis sold then just contact the bank.
  • I've received several calls recently, obviously from a call centre overseas. The callers all have indian accents but give english names. They ask for me by name, and tell me I took out a personal loan in 2005. I didn't take out a loan in 2005 or at any other time. With the first call, I asked who I'd taken out the loan with. She said Barclays. When I said I'd never banked with Barclays, she quickly switched to Lloyds TSB, who do happen to be my bank. It instilled doubt that maybe I did take out a loan and I'd forgotten about it. My husband happened to have picked up the extension on that call and came on the line and we both started asking her questions, trying to establish where she'd got this information, which company she was calling from, that kind of thing. Rather irritably, she asked to speak to only one of us, whereupon we asked her even more questions about her identity and what she wanted. She replied "What the f*ck is this?" and ended the call. Of course, we couldn't phone her back as dialling 1471 revealed that the caller's number wasn't available to return the call.

Since then I've had several more calls with different people on the line (more polite than the first caller!). They all say I took out a loan in 2005 and I repeatedly tell them they're wrong, whereupon they ask me if I've taken out any insurances, etc.

I think they're just fishing - if they carry on long enough, there's a chance they'll hit upon someone who did take out a loan or insurance and who perhaps thinks they may have a claim. I've never got to that point in the call however as they always hang up! I just wish they'd stop calling me. It's obviously a call centre as when I first answer the phone, there's no one on the line but a ringing tone, which stops when someone then comes on the line and asks for me by name.

My guess is that this is nothing to do with PPI at all but a phishing attack.

They simply want your credit card details so they can fleece your account.
  • Thanks magpiecottage. :)

It helps to have your input. Like other scams that have been attempted in recent years (for example the infamous 'computer viruses' one), they seem to bombard you with calls from different 'operatives' over several days or weeks. It seems if one operative doesn't make progress, several more try - even in the same day! I'd wondered whether they really were in the business of making PPI claims on behalf of people or whether they were just after financial details. The calls never progress to the point where I find out, as they always cut me off!
